A diverse group of local leaders, politicians, educators, business owners and citizens have been nominated by the Berrien County Certified Literate Community Participant Program and the Berrien Adult Education Center to participate as contestants in the 5th Annual “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?” competition on Tuesday, May 2. Those nominated were given the opportunity to “play the game” or “opt-out” by donating $25.00 to the Berrien CLCP program and nominating someone else to play. Those brave enough to accept the option to play the game will be competing against a group of exceptionally intelligent 5th graders from Berrien Elementary School.
Student contestants are available to assist the adult contestants with answers which are too hard for them to answer. The questions are selected by the committee from Kindergarten to 5th grade. The students do not have to give the correct answer but can lead the adult contestants astray by slipping them a wrong answer. The competition is based on the “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?” game show hosted by comedian, Jeff Foxworthy.
Opt-out funds from the event are used to assist the Wiregrass Georgia Technical College Berrien County Adult Education and GED center, support the CLCP Scholarship fund for students from the Performance Learning Center and overall promotion to improve high school graduation rates and literacy rates within the county. Proceeds from ticket sales and concessions will be used by the Berrien Elementary School BETA Club for their end of school trip and other projects.
Make plans now to attend an entertaining evening on May 2 at 6:30 p.m. at the Berrien Elementary School as a great adult of adults from throughout Berrien County try to prove that they “Are Smarter Than a 5th Grader?” while raising money for a great cause. Tickets will be sold at the door by the Berrien Elementary School BETA Club.
